Babar Azam was in action for Pakistan on Sunday, January 5, and during the third day’s play of the ongoing second Test against South Africa at Newlands in Cape Town, the right-handed batter was seen losing his cool after a wild throw by South African pacer Wiaan Mulder hit him on the foot. The incident took place on the fourth ball of the 32nd over of Pakistan’s second innings. Babar, who was batting on 58 runs from 87 balls at that time, got forward and drove the ball firmly back at the Mulder, who, after collecting the follow-through, threw the ball back at Babar.
Babar was slightly outside the crease, but the throw was way off target. After getting hit on the toe, Babar wasn’t happy with Mulder’s act, and the duo then exchanged a few words.
The video of the heated moment between the two players was shared by fans on social media platforms on Sunday, and within no time, it went viral on the internet.
Babar, who hasn’t scored a century for Pakistan in Test cricket since December 2022, looked in good touch during his stay at the crease on Sunday, but before he could end his long wait for a triple-digit score, he was sent back to the dugout by Marco Jansen.
Babar, who left Pakistan’s Test captaincy in November 2023, scored 81 runs from 124 runs in the second innings after Temba Bavuma enforced the follow-on. Babar, who amassed a total of 58 runs from 127 balls in the first innings, hammered 10 fours in the second and added 205 runs for the first wicket with captain Shan Masood. Masood finished the third day’s play with a score of 102 runs from 166 balls.
The 205-run stand between Shan and Babar for the first wicket on Sunday was Pakistan’s first wicket partnership in Tests against South Africa. The duo broke the previous record of a 137-run partnership set by Imran Farhat and Taufeeq Umar in Faisalabad back in 2003.
Earlier in the first innings of the ongoing Test at Newlands, Pakistan could only manage to score 194 runs in 54.2 overs and conceded a big lead of 421 runs.
