With the 2024 U19 Asia Cup title within their grasp, Bangladesh captain Azizul Hakim Tamim was seen urging the crowd to chant ‘Allahu Akbar’ during the final few minutes of the final against India held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday. Bangladesh successfully defended their title with a 59-run win.
“They are showman. They know what to do, how to play the galleries. This is what maturity and coming of age means,” Atul Wassan, who was on air during the incident, said.
After being put in to bat first, Bangladesh were bowled out for 198 in 49.1 overs. Mohammad Rizan Hossan top-scored with 47 while Mohammad Shihab James made 40. Captain Azizul was dismissed for 16.
For India, Yudhajit Guha, Hardik Raj and Chetan Sharma picked up two wickets each while Ayush Mhatre and Kiran Chormale chipped in with a wicket each.
India suffered a batting collapse in the chase and were bundled out for 139 in 35.2 overs. They lost both their openers within the first five overs of the chase and kept losing wickets regularly. Azizul and Iqbal Emon took three wickets each to play the starring role with the ball.
India had started their campaign with a defeat to Pakistan before bouncing back to storm into the final with dominant show. They crushed Japan by 211 runs, thrashed UAE by 10 wickets and brushed aside Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the semifinal.
With this, Bangladesh became the second most successful team in the tournament’s history winning their second ever title. With eight titles in 10 appearances, India have won the competition the most times. Pakistan and Afghanistan have emerged victorious once each while Sri Lanka are yet to win their first trophy.
Shahzaib Khan of Pakistan, with 336 runs from four matches, finished as the leading run-getter of the tournament. Among the bowlers, Bangladesh’s Iqbal Emon took the top spot with 13 wickets.
