How England Beat India In The Third Test At Lord’s?
England won the toss for the third consecutive Test and chose to bat for the first time. Several batters made promising starts, but only Joe Root capitalised, ending Day 1 at 251/4, eyeing a century. Root fulfilled his promise on Day 2, scoring his 37th Test hundred. However, Jasprit Bumrah shifted the momentum with a fierce spell, taking three wickets to reduce England to 271/7. Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse then spearheaded a crucial lower-order recovery. Smith, who was dropped on 5, made India regret the error as England’s last three wickets contributed 116 vital runs. Bumrah concluded with five wickets, earning his place on the Lord’s honours board, as England posted 387.
India, trailing by 242, started Day 3 under pressure. KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant initiated a counterattack, but Pant’s run-out by Ben Stokes just before lunch altered the dynamics. Rahul reached a determined century but fell soon after, causing another wobble in the innings. Ravindra Jadeja kept India in the contest with key partnerships alongside Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar. Despite a late collapse, India matched England’s total – just the ninth instance in Test history where both sides posted identical first-innings scores.
The match intensified on Day 4. India’s pace duo struck early, with Siraj and Bumrah reducing England to 98/4. Root and Stokes fought back with a steady partnership, but Washington Sundar dismantled the lower order, taking four wickets as England folded for 192.
Chasing a tricky target, India lost Jaiswal early. Rahul and Karun Nair provided stability, but Carse’s double strike late in the day set them back. On the final morning, Archer dismissed Pant and Sundar, before Stokes unleashed a relentless spell to remove Rahul. Despite Jadeja and Siraj’s brave resistance, the target slipped away. With Bumrah’s dismissal before tea and only the tail remaining, Jadeja’s efforts fell short. England secured a thrilling victory, with Stokes and Archer leading the way in a tense, high-quality contest.
