India on Sunday successfully defended their ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup title when they defeated an unbeaten South Africa in the title clash by nine wickets in Kuala Lumpur. India had a tournament to remember as they won all their contests in dominating fashion to bring home the silverware.

In the process, Niki Prasad-led cricket team became the first from India to win back-to-back world titles. In 2023, India won the inaugural title under the captaincy of Shafali Varma.

Here’s the moment when India were handed over the trophy:

Earlier, South Africa captain Kayla Reyneke won the toss and opted to bat first against India at the Bayuemas Oval. India new ball bowlers began leaving an impact early on, not allowing South Africa innings to take off. Parunika Sisodia and Shabnam Shakil accounted for the openers before the spinners took over.

Gongadi Trisha was the top performer with the ball, finishing with bowling figures of 3/15 from four overs and was well supported by Sisodia (2/6), Aayushi Shukla (2/9) and Vaishnavi Sharma (2/23).

Trisha wasn’t done though yet as led a rapid start before South Africa struck with the scalp of G Kamalini on 8. However, Trisha struck eight fours in a unbeaten 33-ball 44 to take India over the line in company of Sanika Chalke who scored 26 not out.

India overhauled the total to finish with 84/1 in 11.2 overs.

Led by Niki Prasad, India were class apart in the competition having won all their seven matches by handsome margins. They kickstarted the campaign with a nine-wicket win over West Indies before brushing aside Malaysia (by 10 wickets) and Sri Lanka (by 60 runs) to enter the Super Six stage.

India maintained their red-hot form to beat Bangladesh (by 8 wickets) and Scotland (by 150 runs) to storm into the semifinals. In the last-four clash, India got the better of England by 9 wickets to set up final date with South Africa.
