Jasprit Bumrah explains the message to his side after the first batting innings to help shift the focus to a disciplined bowling performance.
Considering how India began the 1st Test against Australia in Perth for the Border-Gavasakar Trophy, not many expected the visitors to win by 295 runs. Stand-in skipper, Jasprit Bumrah revealed the message passed down to his teammates resulting in the side taking the win by a massive margin.
In the post-match press conference, India’s pace spearhead talked about how bowlers can try too hard to take wickets, particularly when you have a low score on the board. Bumrah reflecting on his experience emphasised the importance of maintaining discipline and shifting the focus on making each run hard to get.
“Sometimes when you are bowled out for a lower score, you can be a little too desperate and you can go pole hunting. And you can be too desperate and try too much to get wickets. So that was the message that you know when you try too much over here, it doesn’t help and the run-scoring goes high,” Bumrah shared.
“So, the message was to be nice and disciplined and we’ll make run-making as difficult as we can because that is what has worked in the past over here as well. When we can do that, it gives us a lot of success. So that was the message that was passed,” he added.
Speaking on the conditions at Perth, Bumrah was pleased to see the pitch favouring the quick bowlers. The first two days saw the pitch with plenty of bounce and seam movement on offer and as the days went by, the cracks opened up and the bounce started to reduce.
Bumrah commented, “Yeah, I would never mind you know a wicket having bounce and seam in it, because I love watching fast bowlers bowl and I love to bowl on such wickets as well because when you come in India, the wicket is a lot different. Over here it’s a different challenge with the Kookaburra ball. You get seam movement and you get some bounce, so I am happy with that”.
“I wouldn’t say that it was a bowling paradise, yes bowlers did get some help and they should get it because it is a challenge between bat and ball. So yeah, I’m happy with the wicket was and I’ll be more than happy if the wickets are like that,” he added.
India will now shift their focus to the pink ball Test which is set to take place in Adelaide. The visitors will have a massive boost with Rohit Sharma returning to the side as India have the series lead.
