Mohammed Shami‘s five-wicket haul and Shubman Gill‘s unbeaten century were the highlights of India’s winning start to their Champions Trophy 2025 campaign in Dubai on Thursday as they beat Bangladesh by six wickets. While a couple of dropped catches and a missed stumping allowed Bangladesh to stage a comeback and put up a fight, the Indian fielders did put up some fine efforts.
Virat Kohli‘s overhead catch at covers, Gill’s sharp grab at first slip, wicketkeeper KL Rahul‘s brilliant takes, Mohammed Shami’s running catch near the fine leg region were among the top efforts.
And as has been the custom of the Indian cricket team, the best fielder was rewarded for his effort after the match. There were three contenders – Kohli, Rahul and Gill.
“Well done, boys. Fielding in Dubai isn’t straightforward. The dome lights out there make catching a bit tricky. We take every game is an opportunity to learn and respond. All I would see is next game we come back stronger,” Dilip said while addressing the India players.
“Someone who has really shown that he does what he does all the time going into positions, grabbing every opportunity when it comes his way – none other than Virat Kohli,” he said while praising Kohli.
Dilip continued, “He’s been very consistent behind the stumps, it’s never easy because with the new ball, diving on the leg-side – he’s been doing really well taking those catches, KL Rahul.”
Dilip then proceeded ‘livewire’ Ravindra Jadeja to present the medal.
And it was Rahul who was won the fielder of the match medal with the announcement being done on the giant screen at the Dubai International Stadium.
India had reduced Bangladesh to 35/5 before Towhid Hridoy (100) and Jaker Ali (68) revived the innings as they finished with 228-all out in 49.4 overs. Shami took a five-wicket haul.
India’s reply was led by an unbeaten century from Shubman Gill and a brisk 36-ball 41 from captain Rohit Sharma. Rahul made a solid 41* as India overhauled the target in 46.3 overs.
