Dhoni’s unbeaten 11-ball-26-run innings helped CSK over the line against LSG in their chase of 167 runs at the Ekana Stadium, but the side’s captain looked to limp around at their accommodation in Lucknow after the conclusion of the game.
MS Dhoni, who took the reins of the slumping CSK following an elbow injury to Ruturaj Gaikwad, won the toss against LSG and opted to chase as Chennai limited Lucknow to a total of 166 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. The hosts received a huge chunk of their runs from skipper Rishabh Pant, who made 63 off 49 deliveries, while Mitchell Marsh and Ayush Badoni chipped in with contributions of 30 and 22 runs respectively.
CSK’s Ravindra Jadeja and Matheesha Pathirana picked up a couple of wickets each, while Anshul Kamboj and Khaleel Ahmed claimed a victim each of his own. Chennai did well to keep orange cap holder Nicholas Pooran from his usual high-scoring antics as Kamboj trapped the Windies maverick in front of the sticks cheaply at 8 off 9 balls.
Chennai’s chase was given a positive start as debutant Shaik Rasheed and Racin Racvindra posted a 52-run partnership before Avesh Khan claimed the scalp of the Indian youngster who had made 27 runs. Ravindra made 37 before falling to Aiden Markram. Rahul Tripathi and Jadeja fell cheaply for 9 and 7 runs before Shivam Dube steadied the chase with his unbeaten 43 runs knock. Vijay Shankar, who was dismissed by Digvesh Singh made way for MS Dhoni who saw the game out with his unbeaten innings to give the side only their second win of the season.
Despite the win, CSK continue to remain at the bottom of the table with just 4 points after 6 assignments in what has been a shocker of a season for the joint-most successful side in the history of the tournament. CSK are slated to take on Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede on the 20th of March.
