SA20: Lhuan-dre Pretorius smashed Trent Boult (X)
Paarl Royals (PR) batter Lhuan-dre Pretorius smashed an outrageous flick against MI Cape Town (MICT) on Tuesday, February 4. The David Miller-led side needed to chase a score of 199 to win after a fearless batting display from Cape Town. PR showed some hope early in the game, with Pretorius and Mitchell Owen opening the innings. In the first over of the chase, the 18-year-old batting sensation scored a massive six with a flick of his wrists against generational New Zealand fast-bowler Trent Boult. A video of his shot was later shared by a fan on X (formerly Twitter). “L Pretorius just blew my mind off with this one. Wow,” the post read.
Lhuan-dre Pretorius’ leg-side flick occurred during the third delivery of Trent Boult’s over. He had already smashed the New Zealand veteran for two boundaries in the opening two deliveries. Pretorius followed up with a perfectly timed shot on a good-length delivery that bounced in the middle of the pitch. Having hit the ball into the stands, the young star casually walked away from the crease while the crowd cheered him on.
The 31st game of the SA20 2025 saw MI Cape Town go head-to-head with Paarl Royals at St George’s Oval. Cape Town’s top-order showed up massively for their side, with Ryan Rickelton, Rassie van der Dussen and Dewal Brevis scoring 40-plus runs in the first innings. While Lhuan-dre Pretorius gave his side the perfect start during the chase, he ended up losing his wicket in only the second over. Kagiso Rabada dismissed Pretorius, helping Cape Town curb Paarl Royals at 160. While Pretorius’ team lost by 39 runs, it didn’t stop him from grabbing the headlines.
Lhuan-dre Pretorius’ explosive skills with the willow have earned him high praise from cricket fans and experts. Impressed by his batting prowess, Titans coach Mandla Mashimbyi recently claimed that the 18-year-old could soon be called up for higher honours. “He was able to adapt to what was coming to him at the time,” former Titans coach Mandla Mashimbyi told Daily Maverick. “He has a strong defence. He is different in how he goes about his business, he is very wristy and he thinks about the game deeply.”
The Paarl Royals will play their next SA20 fixture on Thursday, February 6, at the SuperSport Park Cricket Stadium. Their opponents have yet to be decided.
