New Zealand part-timer Glenn Phillips left a huge dent on India’s chances of taking a lead in the first innings of the second Test in Pune when he struck in quick succession to account for the massive wickets of Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal in the morning session on Friday. Having lost the series opener on a pitch that assisted seam and swing bowling, a spin-friendly pitch was laid out in Pune but the ploy has backfired so far with New Zealand taking an upper-hand.

New Zealand made 259-all out in their first dig after being 197/3 at one stage. However, given how Indian batting crumbled to spin bowling on the second day, it will require a remarkable effort from India now to come even close to the total after slumping to 107/7 when the lunch break was taken.

Phillips struck with his fourth ball of this Test when he had overnight batter Jaiswal caught at slip by Daryl Mitchell on 30.

The offspinner didn’t take much time to land a second blow when he cleaned up Pant on 18. The big-hitting wicketkeeper-batter has often bailed out India from trouble and his attempt at taking on the bowling of Phillips proved futile as he missed a big shot only to see the ball crash onto the stumps.

At the lunch break, India were in deep trouble at 107/7, trailing New Zealand by 152 runs. Mitchell Santner inflicted the maximum damage in the morning session taking four wickets for 36 runs including the scalps of Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Sarfaraz Khan and Ravichandran Ashwin.

On Day 1, India were jolted early when Tim Southee struck with the new ball to clean bowled captain Rohit Sharma cheaply. The opening day though was dominated by Washington Sundar whose career-best performance saw him taking seven wickets to limit New Zealand to 259-all out. Ashwin took 3/64.

For the tourists, Devon Conway top-scored with 76 while Rachin Ravindra made 65. The next best came from the bat of Santner who struck 33 off 51.
