A day after announcing his retirement from international cricket, legendary Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin returned to India on Thursday, December 19. The 38-year-old cricketer, who accounted for the dismissal of 765 batters across formats for India during his 14-year-long international career, landed at Chennai airport from Brisbane on Thursday morning. After several videos of Ashwin coming out of the airport went viral on the internet, a video of Ashwin receiving a hero’s welcome at his residence is now going viral on social media platforms.

In the viral clip, many fans and members of Ashwin’s family can be seen giving him a grand welcome. After Ashwin came out of his car to enter his residence, Ashwin’s father, Ravichandran, can be seen hugging him and giving him a kiss. Ashwin’s wife, Prithi, and his two daughters can also be seen accompanying him.

Ashwin, who made his international debut for India in June 2010 during an ODI match against Sri Lanka in Harare, last played for India in Adelaide. The member of the 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy-winning Indian team was part of India’s playing XI in the day-night Test against Australia, which was played from December 6-8 at Adelaide Oval. In the match that India lost by 10 wickets inside three days, Ashwin was only able to take one wicket.

Ashwin, who is India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests as well as international cricket, was ignored for the series opener of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which was played from November 22 to 25 at Optus Stadium in Perth. Indian team management preferred 25-year-old Tamil Nadu spinner Washington Sundar over Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the playing XI.

During his 14-year-long Test career, Ashwin played 106 matches for India and dismissed 537 batters. In the World Test Championship (WTC), Ashwin accounted for the dismissal of 195 batters in 41 matches, which is the most by any player.

Apart from his super performances with the ball, Ashwin won many matches for India with his batting as well. He finished his career with 3,503 runs and six centuries, 14 fifties to his name. For his super performances with both bat and ball, Ashwin won the ICC Cricketer and ICC Test Player of the Year awards in 2016.
