“Cricket is more than just a religion in India, it’s our identity. An identity that’s only risen like the country it represents to be a bolder more confident version of itself. Aggressive, a team for all conditions,” Gavaskar said.
Ponting then adds that India will have to be aggressive in Australia. “Well listen here Sunil, India’s gonna need to be. Cricket is our country’s greatest source of national pride. And there’s plenty to be proud about,” he said.
Ponting pointed out how India and Australia have locked horns in several big tournaments over the years. He also discussed how Australia came out on top on several ICC events but have failed to beat India in their previous two home Test series.
“The Indian cricket team has become our greatest rivals. We faced off in World Test Championship finals. Extraordinary fifty-over World Cup finals. And while our boys have come out on top, the last two Indian tours to Australia have seen the home side humbled. It’s time to put that record straight,” Ponting concluded.
India secured a victory in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in their last two trips to Australia. They won both the 2018/19 and 2020/21 tours with a similar scoreline of 2-1.
The tourists will now be eyeing for a third consecutive series triumph Down Under.
