Contrasting to the 2023 World Cup final where Travis Head took a blinder catch for his first mistake, Rohit Sharma lived a charmed life at the start of his innings in the 2025 Champions Trophy semi-final against Australia at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday. Newbie Cooper Connolly and Marnus Labuschagne dropped him twice within four balls, although both varied in terms of difficulty.
The first happened on the third ball of the second over, being bowled by Nathan Ellis. Rohit cut a short and wide ball straight to Connolly, who was playing his first match in the tournament, didn’t seem to spot it in time and went with hard hands, which meant the ball didn’t stick. Rohit was at 13 (8) at this time.
The second happened on the last ball of the third over. Pacer Ben Dwarshuis bowled it full and wide outside off and Rohit went for a chipped drive over covers but ended up slicing it high in the air. Labuschagne ran after it from mid-off at full tilt but couldn’t get under it in time to finish the catch.
