Shubman Gill, who replaced Rohit Sharma in India’s playing XI for the ongoing fifth Test against Australia at Sydney Cricket Ground, failed to make the most out of his opportunity in the first innings. The 25-year-old right-handed batter walked out to bat at No. 3 following the dismissal of opener KL Rahul. The youngster initially looked solid in his defence. He, however, could not maintain his composure for long. Gill scored 20 off 64 balls before nicking a short-length delivery off Nathan Lyon. The right-hander charged down the crease attempting a big shot but missed the line completely.

The ball brushed off the outside edge of his bat, with Steve Smith completing a brilliant catch at the slips. The Australians broke into an emphatic celebration as India lost their third wicket at 57 just before lunch on Day 1. Smith was visibly hyped up after taking the catch. He shared high-fives with his teammates while hurling some words towards a dejected Gill.

It was Gill’s third appearance in this series. He was sidelined during the series opener in Perth due to a finger injury. Gill made a return to the playing eleven for the pink ball Test at Adelaide, where he registered 31 and 28 runs in two innings.

His performance was quite poor in the Gabba Test as well. Gill managed to survive just three deliveries before getting dismissed by Mitchell Starc. He was dropped from the Boxing Day fixture in Melbourne, which India lost by 184 runs.

Similar to the previous games, the Indian top order once again made a disastrous start in the Sydney Test. Jasprit Bumrah, who took over the captaincy, replacing Rohit Sharma, won the toss and elected to bat first.

After Gill’s wicket, Virat Kohli again got exposed to an outside-off delivery by Scott Boland and ended up being caught by Beau Webster in the third slip. It was the seventh time that Kohli was dismissed in a similar fashion in this BGT series. After he walked back to the hut, Ravindra Jadeja took over the charge with Rishabh Pant. India needs a good partnership to recover from the early setback.
