Steve Smith’s rough patch in Tests continued as he was dismissed for just two runs in the first innings of the second Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Jasprit Bumrah sent the former Australian captain back to the dressing room.
Bumrah’s delivery angled down the leg stump and Smith attempted to glance it away but failed to get enough bat on it. An edge followed and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant dived to his left to complete a fine catch.
Smith shook his head in disgust following the dismissal.
Smith also had an ordinary outing in the first Test of the five-match series. He was dismissed for a duck by Bumrah in the first innings of that encounter in Perth. He did manage to open his account in the second dig but failed to score big. He added 17 runs before being removed by Mohammed Siraj.
India won the first Test by a resounding margin of 295 runs.
Earlier, Usman Khawaja was first Australian to return to the dressing room after India were bowled out for 180 in their first innings. It was Bumrah who claimed his wicket in the 11th over. The other opening batter Nathan McSweeney was next to depart in the 37th over, scoring 39 runs followed by Smith.
Travis Head scored a brilliant century to put Australia ahead. It was Siraj who dislodged the Australian on 140. Head was ably supported by Marnus Labuschagne who returned to form with a patient half-century.
Australia were bowled out for 337 in their second dig and thereby took 157-run lead. The hosts are bidding to pull themselves on level terms after losing the series opener by a huge margin.
