Sunil Gavaskar was seen dancing during Wankhede Stadium’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
India’s legendary Test batter Sunil Gavaskar channelled his inner Shah Rukh Khan during Wankhede Stadium’s 50th anniversary celebrations on January 19. While Gavaskar is known to have produced several match-winning knocks for India in the past, his dancing skills are rather unheard of. The legendary batter has now, caught the internet’s attention after he was spotted grooving to the Bollywood song Deewangi Deewangi from the movie Om Shanti Om on-stage. The official account of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has shared a clip of Gavaskar’s eye-catching moves on X. “Don’t miss Sunny G’s apratim dance performance!” the post read.
The MCA organised the blockbuster event to celebrate the golden jubilee of the Wankhede Stadium. The occasion was made special by the presence of several present and retired cricketers. During the event, Sunil Gavaskar joined in on the dance with singer Shekhar Ravjiani. Gavaskar could later be seen reciting lines from the Bollywood song alongside the Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, much to the delight of the fans surrounding them. The anniversary event was also graced by the presence of Indian cricket icons like Rohit Sharma, Ravi Shastri, Ajinkya Rahane, Dilip Vengsarkar and Diana Edulji.
Sunil Gavaskar acknowledged the massive pride he felt being from Mumbai during the anniversary celebrations. “It feels like a home ground, and that’s truly a wonderful feeling. The chest swells with pride,” he said during the event, as per CricBuzz. India skipper Rohit Sharma echoed the sentiment, describing the Wankhede Stadium as a special place. “I’ve been playing here since I was 14. The Wankhede holds a special place for India, Mumbai, and the MI teams. The crowds here never let you down. After celebrating the 2007 T20 World Cup win at this ground, I dreamed of bringing another one home myself,” Rohit said.
Sunil Gavaskar was the first batter in Test history to register 10,000 runs. He finished his career with a Test average of 51.12 and 34 centuries in the format. Gavaskar was later surpassed by fellow Mumbai star Sachin Tendulkar who smashed all records to finish with an incredible 15,921 Test runs. He remains the leading scorer across formats with 34,357 runs in international cricket. Tendulkar registered 100 centuries in 664 outings for India.
As for Rohit Sharma, the India skipper is currently set to represent Mumbai in the 2025 edition of the Ranji Trophy. He will be looking to recover some form ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy.
