Chennai Super Kings continue to struggle in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League. The MS Dhoni-led franchise succumbed to a sixth defeat of the tournament which has further dented their chances of playoffs qualification. Currently, they have just four points from eight games and are languishing at the 10th spot on the points table.
On Sunday, in their second meeting of IPL 2025 with Mumbai Indians, CSK received a royal thrashing with the hosts storming to a 9-wicket win to improve their net run-rate and brighten their hopes of a top-four finish after a below-par start to the season.
Chasing 177, Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav struck blazing unbeaten fifties to take MI over the line in just 15.4 overs. Suryakumar finished the contest with consecutive sixes off the bowling of right-arm pacer Matheesha Pathirana.
Soon Suryakumar’s match-winning six, as other CSK players shook hands with the unbeaten MI batters, Dhoni headed towards the on-field umpire Abhijit Bhattacharya and had a word with the match official.

Upset by the defeat, Dhoni later said while the franchise’s immediate goal is to qualify for the playoffs, he wants the team to settle on a “secured eleven for next year”.
“What we need to realise is that we are successful because we play good cricket and at the same time, when we are not playing good cricket, what is important is not to get too emotional about it and at the same time you want to be practical,” Dhoni said after the match.
“…we are just trying to plug in the holes, with all the games that are in front of us that we are supposed to win, we just take it one game at a time and if we lose a few, what will be important for us is to get the right combination for next year. You don’t want too many players getting changed, what will be important is to try and qualify, but if not get a secured 11 for next year and come back strong,” he added.
Dhoni took over the reins midway through the season after regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out from the season due to an elbow fracture. CSK next face Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday.
