By scoring a six off Hazlewood’s bowling to bring up his fourth Test century, Jaiswal became the third Indian to score a century in his first Test in Australia.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was batting on 95 runs from 204 balls when he hit a six against Josh Hazlewood to bring up his maiden Test century in Australia. The left-handed batter is the third Indian after Motganhalli Jaisimha and Sunil Gavaskar to score a century in his first Test Down Under.
Jaisimha scored 101 runs in the second inning of the Brisbane Test played in 1968, and Gavaskar amassed a total of 113 runs in the second inning of the Brisbane Test played from December 2 to 6 in 1977.
The video of Jaiswal hitting a six to complete his first Test century in Australia and celebrating after it is now going viral on the internet.
Jaiswal hammered eight fours and three sixes to cross the 100-run mark. He finished the second day’s play at the individual score of 90 runs and didn’t need much time to score the remaining 10 runs on Sunday and complete his century.
He added 201 runs for the first wicket with KL Rahul, who scored 77 runs. By stitching a partnership of 201 runs for the first wicket, the duo broke Sunil Gavaskar and Kris Srikkanth’s record of highest Test opening partnership for India in Australia.
During the India-Australia Test match played in Sydney from January 2 to 6 in 1986, Gavaskar and Srikkanth added 191 runs.
At the end of 70 overs of India’s second innings, Jaiswal was batting on 116 runs from 229 balls, which has helped him break Gavaskar’s record of highest individual score by an Indian batter in his first Test in Australia.
Jaiswal, who is India’s highest-ranked Test batter, would now like to convert his century into a big score and help India score more than 400 runs in the second innings.
Most sixes in a calendar year
During the second day’s play of the ongoing first Test, Jaiswal broke former New Zealand captain and wicketkeeper-batter Brendon McCullum’s world record of hitting most sixes in a calendar year. McCullum smashed 33 sixes in nine Tests for the Kiwis in 2015, whereas in 12 matches played so far for India in 2024, Jaiswal has 35 sixes to his name. He went past McCullum’s tally during the third session of Day 2 when he hit a 100+ meter six off Nathan Lyon’s bowling.
