Varun Chakaravarthy made his ODI debut for India on Sunday, February 9. The 33-year-old spinner from Tamil Nadu received his maiden one-day cap from Ravindra Jadeja before the toss of the second India-England ODI, which is currently underway at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. Chakaravarthy replaced Kuldeep Yadav in India’s playing XI for the second match of the home series.

In a video shared by BCCI’s official X handle, while giving ODI No. 259 to Chakaravarthy, Jadeja praised his performances in T20Is and said it’s time for him to do something really special in ODIs.

“Varun, cap number 259. It’s a special day for you and your family. From tennis ball cricket to T20 cricket, we all have seen your magic. Now it’s time to do something, something really special in this format. And we all are with you. Just give your 100% and good luck,” Jadeja said.

Chakaravarthy acknowledged his teammate’s gesture and said, “It feels very good because it’s been a long journey from my 2021 T20 debut. And I’ve got this breakthrough now. And it’s come after playing a lot of domestic Vijay Hazare. So, I will definitely cherish it and value it.”

Chakaravarthy was introduced to the attack in the ninth over of England’s innings, and on the fifth ball of his second over of the match, he picked up his first ODI wicket. England wicketkeeper-batter Phil Salt (26 runs from 29 balls) tried to play a big shot against him but failed to connect with the ball properly, and it went straight up.

Jadeja completed the easy catch to open Varun’s account in the 50-over format of the game for India. The Kolkata Knight Riders star trapped Joe Root in front of the wickets on the last ball of his second over, but on-field umpire Chris Brown wasn’t convinced with the appeal, after which Chakaravarthy opted for DRS. But in the ball-tracking, the ball was turning down leg and missing the stumps.

India’s playing XI for the 2nd ODI against England: Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (WK), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Shami, Varun Chakravarthy.
