India allrounder Axar Patel was on the brink of a historic hat-trick during India’s opening match of the Champions Trophy 2025 against Bangladesh earlier this month. However, his captain Rohit Sharma failed to hold onto a regulation catch at first slip and thus denied his teammate a rare feat.

Rohit, who repeatedly slammed the turf in frustration after missing the catch, later quipped hey may compensate for the mistake by taking Axar out for dinner.

So has Rohit kept his promise?

After India’s win over Pakistan in Dubai last Sunday, ICC shared a clip in which Axar said, “It was a high-pressure match. Now we have a six-day break, and we’ve qualified (for the semis) so I hoping to get the chance to get that dinner.”

In his very first over of the Group A clash against Bangladesh, Axar struck with the scalps of Tanzid Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim in what was the 9th over of the innings. Jaker Ali, the new batter, then got a thick outside edge to first slip where Rohit ended up dropping the catch.

Jaker went on to stitch a big century stand with Towhid Hridoy and the duo lifted Bangladesh from 35/5 to 228-all out. Axar finished with bowling figures of 2/43 from 10 overs.

India chased down the target in 46.3 overs with Shubman Gill scoring an unbeaten century.
