Due to the heightened diplomatic between India and Pakistan, the cricket teams of the two neighbours do not engage in bilateral cricket tours. They play each other exclusively in ICC or continental tournaments. The last bilateral series between the two teams was held in 2012-13 when Pakistan toured India for five white-ball matches.
On the other hand, India haven’t toured Pakistan since 2005-06. Additionally, the BCCI has refused to send their team across the border for two major tournaments including the Asia Cup in 2023 and the ongoing Champions Trophy with the Indian team playing all their matches of the aforementioned competitions at a neutral venue as per a Hybrid Model.
Sunil Gavaskar was recently asked the question on a Pakistani cricket show ‘Dressing Room’ on Sports Central and he said unless there’s peace at the borders, there cannot be a talk of resumption of bilateral cricket ties.
“By frankly having peace at the borders. It’s very simple. If there’s peace at the borders, then I think both governments will certainly say, ‘Look, okay, we’ve had no incidents, nothing at all. So let’s at least start with talking,'” Gavaskar said.
“I’m pretty certain there will be some back-channel connections going on. But you want to see what’s happening both on the ground and off the ground because of the fact that there are incursions we hear about. That’s the reason why the Indian government is saying, ‘Look, maybe until all that stops, we should not even look at having or talking about anything,'” he added.
India recently faced Pakistan in a Group A match of the Champions Trophy and the Rohit Sharma-led side maintained their domination over their arch-rivals by securing a comfortable six-wicket win.
Pakistan haven’t beaten India in ODIs since the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy. India have six of their seven matches since then with one producing no result.
India have qualified for the semifinals of the Champions Trophy 2025 while Pakistan have crashed out without winning a single game.
