Devajit Saikia on Sunday was elected unopposed as the new secretary of BCCI. He was the only one to file a nomination for the post vacated by Jay Shah.
Devajit Saikia on Sunday, January 12, was elected unopposed as the new secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Saikia, who is an advocate by profession, has played in the Ranji Trophy for Assam as a wicketkeeper-batter. In the past, he has also served as the secretary of the Assam Cricket Association. According to a report in Indian Express, Saikia will remain as BCCI secretary for the next ten months, until the next round of elections for the office-bearers.
Saikia made his Ranji Trophy debut for Assam in 1991 and played four matches as a wicketkeeper and middle-order batter. He gave up his cricket career at the age of 21 in order to pursue his career in academics.
He is a classmate of Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, and was appointed as senior standing counsel of the State in 2019. He represented the Assam government in the High Court and Supreme Court. Apart from cricket associations, he is into administrating other sports bodies too. He is the secretary of the 115-year-old Guwahati Town Club as well as the Guwahati Sports.
Assam Cricket Association (ACA) Saikia’s election as the secretary of the BCCI on Sunday and expressed confidence that his experience will benefit the further promotion of the sport in the country.
“The Assam Cricket Association proudly extends its heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Devajit Saikia on his election as the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). His unopposed election to this esteemed position is a reflection of the unwavering trust and confidence reposed in him by the member boards of the BCCI,” the state’s apex cricketing body said in a statement.
Saikia, who is also the advocate general of Assam, has previously served as vice president of ACA from 2016 to 2019 and as secretary from 2019 to 2022.
“His election marks a historic milestone for Assam’s cricketing journey, and the association is confident that under his guidance, cricket will continue to thrive and reach unprecedented heights,” the ACA statement added.
