Tanveer Sangha was named in Australia‘s playing XI against India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.
Steve Smith won the toss and opted to bat and announced that apart from Sangha, Cooper Connolly replaced the injured Matthews Short. India were unchanged from their last group-stage game against New Zealand.

Who Is Tanveer Sangha?
Tanveer Sangha was born and raised in Sydney. A natural athlete in his youth and a brilliant performer in multiple sports, his parents wanted him to pursue a volleyball career. Sangha though had his heart set on cricket.
Sangha soon realised that he just did not have the required height or speed to become a great pace bowler. This forced him to turn his attention to leg-spin during his teens. The Aussie-spinner honed his craft by watching video tutorials from YouTube and in a few years, he was already representing his country at the Under-16 level.
Tanveer Sangha is only the fourth player of Indian origin to be selected for Australia. The other names include the likes of Gurinder Sandhu, Stuart Clark and Bransby Cooper.
Is Tanveer Indian?
Tanveer’s father, Joga Singh, originally comes from a village near Punjab’s Jalandhar and works as a taxi driver in Sydney. Tanveer’s mother, Upjeet Kaur, is from Fiji and works as an accountant in Sydney. Tanveer also has a sister named Simran.
Tanveer’s Cricket Record
Tanveer has played three one-day internationals and seven Twenty20 Internationals. The 23-year-old has two ODI and 10 T20I wickets to his name.
Tanveer started representing Australia’s Under-16 team in 2018 and in the same year, led New South Wales Metro to victory in the U17 National Championships in Queensland. He was the team’s leading wicket-taker, catching the attention of Cricket Australia, and was selected to represent the Cricket Australia XI in the U19 National Championships in Adelaide. His performances earned him a spot on the Australian U19 tour of Sri Lanka in 2019 and also awarded the NSW Cricket Basil Sellers Scholarship.
Tanveer was selected as the Sydney Thunder Development Rookie for the Big Bash League (BBL) in 2018 and yet again his performances earned him a promotion to first team the following season in 2019.
Tanveer was selected to represent Australia in the 2020 U19 World Cup in South Africa and shined with 15 wickets from just 6 matches at an average of just 11.46 with two 4-wicket hauls and one 5-wicket haul.
Aged 18, Tanveer was awarded a state contract with New South Wales Cricket.
Tanveer made his debut for the Sydney Thunder in the 2020-2021 BBL season on December 12 and picked up two wickets. He ended up the third-highest wicket-taker in the competition with 21 wickets at an impressive economy of 8.04 runs per over.
In 2021, the then 19-year-old was named in Australia’s T20I squad for their series against New Zealand. He made his first-class debut the same year for New South Wales in the 2021-22 Sheffield Shield season as well as his List A debut on November 24, 2021, for New South Wales in the 2021-22 Marsh One-Day Cup.
In 2023, Tanveer made his T20I debut against South Africa at Kingsmead and shined with four wickets for 31 runs, making him the youngest Australian to do so in Men’s T20Is.
