Delhi Capitals bowling coach Munaf Patel has been fined by the BCCI for breaching IPL code of conduct during the team’s thrilling Super Over win against former champions Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday night. Patel, who played a key role in India’s 2011 ODI World Cup winning squad, has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees and also accumulated a demerit point.
“Munaf Patel admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.20 – which pertains to the conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game – and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction,” the BCCI said in a statement on Thursday afternoon.
Patel was appointed DC bowling coach last November, replacing James Hopes who was let go of alongside former head coach Ricky Ponting. He is part of the franchise’s backroom staff comprising head coach Hemang Badani and Director of Cricket Venugopal Rao.
Patel, a right-arm fast bowler, represented India in 13 Tests, 70 ODIs and three T20Is and took a combined 125 wickets in them.
Additionally, he also played in 63 IPL games for three teams including Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Lions. He took 74 wickets at an economy of 7.51.
DC have been quite impressive in the ongoing IPL 2025. They are currently at the top of the 10-team points table winning five of their six matches so far.
The Axar Patel-led franchise played out a nail-biter against RR at home which ended on level terms in regulation overs before winning it in the Super Over.
Batting first, DC posted a competitive 188/5 before limiting RR to 188/4 despite the visitors making a flying start thanks to their openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (51) and Sanju Samson (31) adding 76 runs in 8 overs.
Set 12 runs to win in the Super Over, DC chased down the target with two deliveries to spare. DC will next face Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.
