Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill has been fined Rs 12 lakh by the BCCI for his team maintaining a slow over-rate during their IPL 2025 clash against Delhi Capitals at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Saturday. Gill-led GT were punished during the match too as they were allowed to place only four fielders outside the circle for the 20th over as the on-field umpires deemed they were behind the over-rate.
“As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Gill was fined INR 12 lakhs,” the BCCI said in a statement.
GT defeated DC by seven wickets to climb up to the top spot on the points table.
GT, DC and Punjab Kings have now 10 points each from seven matches. However, thanks to a superior net run-rate GT currently are at the top of the standings followed by DC and PBKS.
Gill credited his bowlers for ensuring DC didn’t post a mammoth total.
“At one point, it looked like the total was going to be 220-230. The way we pulled back, credit to the bowlers. Even in the first game, chasing around 245, we were right in the game, lost by just 10 runs. We’ve been chasing well, we’ve been defending well,” Gill said during the post-match presentation.
GT’s chase of 204 was powered by their in-form wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler’s unbeaten 97 off 54. The Englishman struck 11 fours and four sixes as GT achieved the target in 19.2 overs.
However, it wasn’t a good day in the office for Gill with the bat as he was run out on 7.
“Disappointing way to get out but we’ve got plenty of games here and hopefully will get my chance,” Gill said.
Gill lauded Buttler and Sherfane Rutherford for their match-winning partnership of 119 runs for the third wicket.
“Magnificent the way Butter and Rutherford rotated strike and those hits were tremendous. It was not just brutal hitting, it was very calculated batting, it was a treat to watch,” he said.
