Former captain Moin Khan seems to have had enough of the current Pakistan cricket team, stating on Friday that there exists a pressing need to rebuild the entire team and have senior players earn their places back.

The hosts, Pakistan, had nothing short of an abysmal showing at the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Pakistan created an unwanted record on Thursday by becoming the first host nation in ICC Champions Trophy history to exit the tournament without winning a single match.

The Mohammad Rizwan-led side suffered a shocking defeat by 60 runs against New Zealand in the tournament opener played at National Stadium in Karachi on February 19, and in the second Group A match played at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on February 23, India hammered them by 6 wickets after chasing down the target of 242 runs in 42.3 overs.

The Pakistani team wanted to end the tournament with a win on Thursday, February 27, but the plan flopped after the match against Bangladesh at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium was called off due to rain.

The deplorable state of Pakistan cricket had former skipper Moin Khan worked up, who emphasised the need for a complete overhaul of the team.

“I am listening to the comments of many former players nowadays, but since we are already losing, why not just build a new team? What is the worst that can happen? We will lose, but at least we would have done something different,” Moin said.

Moin criticized the flawed and safe approach of the selectors in the PCB, who, in his opinion, had seemingly opted to bring in past-proven talent from across different formats to assemble their squad for the Champions Trophy.

“Look, no one is saying they are not good players, but every player, no matter who he is, has to justify his place in the side on consistent performances.”

“The thing is, do we even try to properly and justly give exposure to new players, groom them, and encourage them? Our problem is that we have different policies for different players.

The former skipper, who himself has been a chief selector, head coach and manager of the national team, said there was no excuse for the national team exiting from the Champions trophy despite playing at home.

“The players let down everyone. So please go for a new team; it will be better for Pakistan cricket.”
