Delhi Capitals registered a narrow two-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in a last-ball thriller in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 match at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara on Saturday.

Despite the thrilling encounter, the two contentious run-out decisions were the point of discussion and debate as fans and experts weighed in on third-umpire decisions.

The first happened on the fourth ball of the 18th over. Shikha Pandey attempted a pull shot to a delivery from Hayley Matthews but missed but attempted a risky bye and was promptly sent back by non-striker Niki Prasad.

There was a direct hit made at the keeper’s end as Shikha looked out of her ground. The umpire decided to refer the decision upstairs and the replays showed it was an extremely close call. After a thorough review, the third umpire Gayathri Venugopalan declared Pandey not out. Harmanpreet Kaur looked visibly unhappy and went over for a discussion with the on-field umpires.

Just seven balls later, Radha Yadav was involved in a similar incident when she hit a delivery from Saika Ishaque towards point and set off for a single. She was sent back and the DC batter decided to put in a dive to save herself.

Replays showed that her bat was in the air when the bails were removed but the third umpire judged that it had landed inside the crease before bouncing and the decision was again not out.

MI captain Harmanpreet Kaur again had a chat with the on-field umpires.

On the last ball of the match, Arundhati Reddy carved Sajana S over the in-field and set off for the required two runs. Harmanpreet was chasing the ball near cover as the DC pair scampered back. Kaur did take a bit too long before releasing it back to the keeper as Reddy stretched to manage to sneak inside the crease barely. The third umpire was again called to make a call but replays suggested that Arundhati Reddy had made her ground.

Watch:

With confusion surrounding when the batter is deemed to be out with respect to the lights turning on and the bails being removed completes off the groves, here is what WPL playing conditions say: “Where LED wickets are used, the moment at which the wicket has been put down shall be deemed to be the first frame in which the LED lights are illuminated and subsequent frames show the bail permanently removed from the top of the stumps.”
