Star Indian opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal is all set to play for Mumbai in the team’s upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Jammu & Kashmir. Mumbai will face Jammu & Kashmir in the Elite Group A match of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season from January 23 to 26 at Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC in Mumbai. According to a report in the Indian Express on Saturday, “Yashasvi Jaiswal will be available for selection in the match that will be crucial for Mumbai’s knockout chances.”

Jaiswal, who last played in the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai in the 2022-23 season, has 833 runs to his name in nine matches. His batting average in the premier domestic red-ball tournament is 59.50, and he has hammered 4 centuries and 2 fifties in 17 innings.

The match between Mumbai and J&K will also see Indian men’s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma in action in the Ranji Trophy after 10 years. The 37-year-old right-handed batter last played a Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai against Uttar Pradesh at Wankhede Stadium in November 2015.

Rohit confirmed his participation in the must-win match for Mumbai on Saturday during India’s Champions Trophy squad announcement press conference.

“I will (play),” Rohit said when asked about his participation.

Rohit, who was appointed as India’s Test captain in January 2022, has 3941 runs to his name in 45 Ranji Trophy matches played so far. His batting average in the Ranji Trophy for the 42-time champions is 66.79, and he has scored 14 centuries and 15 fifties.

Rohit’s best score in the Ranji Trophy is 309 (not out), which he scored against Gujarat at Brabourne Stadium in December 2009.

During the press conference after confirming his availability for the Ranji Trophy match, Rohit said that no player takes the premier domestic red-ball tournament “for granted.”

“Last 6-7 years, if you go back and look at our calendar, there hasn’t been a time where we were sitting at home for 45 days and there was (domestic) cricket going on. You do get that time when you finish IPL, and if there’s nothing happening (in domestic cricket) right after that…” Rohit said.

“But if you see our domestic season, it starts in October, maybe September, and it gets over by February-March, and that is the time India plays a lot of cricket as well. So, guys who are not playing certain formats and have time, and then there is domestic cricket happening, then they will play.”

“But (in) the last 6-7 years, I can at least tell about what has happened with me since I’ve started playing Test cricket regularly, which is from 2019; you hardly have any time in hand, and then, when you play so much international cricket through the year, you need some time off as well as a cricketer just to refresh, get your mind right, just to be ready for the upcoming season,” he added.
