Yashasvi Jaiswal’s rush-of-blood ended his 102-run stand with Virat Kohli, who himself got out seven balls later.
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s horrible run-out gifted his wicket away to Australia to end a great stand with Virat Kohli against the run of play at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in the Boxing Day Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Friday.
It was like a rush-of-blood moment from Jaiswal on the last ball of the 41st over, being bowled by Scott Boland. It was on a full length on off and Jaiswal drove it crisply to Pat Cummins at mid-on and set off for the run. Kohli at the non-striker’s looked at the fielder, shouting against the run and standing his ground, but it was too late.
Jaiswal was already at the other end and though Cummins’ attempted direct hit missed the striker’s end, wicketkeeper Alex Carey collected it and broke the stumps. Watch it here:
It was the worst possible result for India just 20 or so minutes before the Stumps. Kohli and Jaiswal had built up the innings from 51/2 to 153/2.
The young left-hander was playing one of the best innings of his series, scoring 82 (117) with 11 boundaries and a six. He excellently played out the new ball and changed gears against off-spinner Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Marsh. He’d be disappointed to miss out on a century.
The wicket followed the old adage, ‘one brings two’. Seven deliveries after Jaiswal’s run-out, Kohli had a lapse of concentration and edged one to Carey off the first ball of Boland’s next over, losing his wicket for 36 (86) after playing with brilliant control all day.
India lost both set batters and were suddenly 154/4 with nightwatchman Akash Deep and wicketkeeper-batter Rishab Pant at the crease. Australian bowlers, who looked to be getting tired by bowling on a flattening track, found a new spring in their steps.
India would feel hard done but not converting starts has been the story of their tour. Earlier, Rahul had gotten out to a beauty by Pat Cummins for 24 (42). Australia, in comparison, saw three half-centuries from their top-three and a big hundred from Steve Smith.
