Yashasvi Jaiswal hammered 77 runs from just 65 balls for India in the second inning of the second Test against New Zealand, which the hosts lost by 113 runs at MCA Stadium in Pune on Saturday (October 26). The 22-year-old left-handed batter, who made his Test debut for India last year in July, looked completely different from the rest of the Indian players, who had no answers to questions posed by Mitchell Santner, Ajaz Patel, and Glenn Phillips.
Jaiswal’s brilliant knock in the otherwise forgetful match for India impressed former Indian middle-order batter Manoj Tiwary, who, while speaking on a Cricbuzz show, praised the youngster by calling him the God’s gift to cricket. According to the 38-year-old Tiwary, who played in 12 ODIs and three T20Is for Men in Blue during his international career, Jaiswal has the qualities to become the legend of the game in the future.
“He is a legend in the making. I rate him very highly. I do it because he has everything a cricketer needs to become a great cricketer. And it is quite visible even at such a young age.”
“What does he have? He has technique. He has a positive mindset. He has hunger. He has a desire to improve in every inning. And no matter what the situation is, no matter who is in the bowling opposition, he shows with his batting that who is dominating. And domination only comes when you think well, you have good technique, and you have a good range of shots.”
“In such a wicket (of MCA Stadium in Pune), if you look at the rest of the great players, they were not able to hit any big runs. But this player, at such a young age, the way he is bowling, the way he is hitting the shots—he is a God’s gift to cricket,” he added.
In his 13-match long Test career, Jaiswal has scored 1372 runs so far at an average of 59.65. He scored 171 on his debut against the West Indies and then hammered double centuries in back-to-back Tests against England earlier this year.
During his 77-run knock in the Pune Test, Jaiswal also broke Gundappa Viswanath’s 45-year-old record of scoring most runs (1045) for India in Tests played at home in a calendar year.
