Yashasvi Jaiswal would go on to register a composed unbeaten 90 and KL Rahul a stylish 62 Saturday as India built an ominous 218-run lead over Australia to take a stranglehold
Former Indian skipper and legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar lavished praise on the brilliance of opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, whose “special” innings today along with KL Rahul helped India build a domitable lead at the end of Day 2 of the first Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy on Saturday.
By the end of the day, Yashasvi Jaiswal would go on to register a composed unbeaten 90 and KL Rahul a stylish 62 Saturday as India built an ominous 218-run lead over Australia to take a stranglehold on the Test as of now.
The Indian opening duo would ransack the Australian bowlers, as Jaiswal faced 193 balls while Rahul fended off 153 to steer India to 172 without loss, becoming the first Indian opening pair to register a 100-run stand in Australia in Tests in the last 20 years.
Jaiswal’s ninth Test fifty came in 123 balls – the slowest half-century of his career so far, but it was the adjustments he showed which aided him in shining the brightest.
“This boy’s special (Jasiwal), He really is special. Looking at where he’s come from and the way he’s been batting, the way he’s been handling fame, it’s not easy sometimes to handle fame”, Gavaskar stated on Star Sports.
“He’s hungry for runs, and that’s exactly what Indian cricket needs. A left-hander who at the top of the order can create problems for the bowlers, whether they’re Australian, English, whatever, because he brings a completely different perspective.”
“I think, Yashasvi Jaiswal, he has the cricketing world at his feet.”
Gavaskar also shared his appreciation for KL Rahul and the role he played in the partnership, saying, “I think what he’s done is he’s eased up the pressure on Yashasvi Jaiswal.”
“When you have a partner at the other end who’s looking so secure, like Rahul is doing, then the other partner who’s got more strokes, who’s a little more adventurous in playing shots, and that’s what happened. So Yashasvi Jaiswal has actually flowered in his company. You can say that because he’s seen the solidity of Rahul,” stated Gavaskar.
