Star opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was on fire for India in the second inning of the ongoing second Test against New Zealand at Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune, created history on Saturday (October 26) by becoming the first Indian and overall second batter in the world to score more than 30 sixes in a calendar year in Tests.

The 22-year-old left-handed batter, in his 10th Test match of the 2024, hammered three sixes during his 65-ball 77-run knock. The six maximums on Saturday took his tally of sixes to 31 in 2024.

Former New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum holds the record for scoring most sixes in a calendar year in Tests. In nine matches for the Black Caps in 2014, he hammered 33 sixes.

Most sixes in a calendar year in Tests

  • Brendon McCullum (New Zealand): 33 in 2014
  • Yashasvi Jaiswal (India): 31 in 2024
  • Ben Stokes (England): 26 in 2022

Jaiswal, who made his Test debut for India in July 2023 against the West Indies, already holds the record for scoring most sixes in an inning of a Test match. He achieved the feat during India’s third Test of the five-match series played against England in Rajkot from February 15-19, 2024. During his 214-run knock in the second inning, he hammered as many as 12 sixes.

Before joining McCullum in an elite list during the second session of the third day’s play of the India-New Zealand Test in Pune, Jaiswal joined legendary Indian cricketers Gundappa Viswanath and Sunil Gavaskar in an elite list during the morning session. The 22-year-old cricketer from Mumbai became only the third Indian after Gundappa and Gavaskar to score more than 1000 Test runs at home in a calendar year.

Only seven batters in the world have managed to score more than 1000 runs in Tests at home in a calendar year, and Jaiswal is one of them, and in fact he is the youngest batter to achieve the feat.

Jaiswal, who was sent back to the pavilion by Mitchell Santner on the third ball of the 22nd over, also became the fastest Indian batter to score 1000 Test runs at home on Saturday. He completed 1000 runs in 1315 balls, whereas Virender Sehwag needed 1436 balls to cross the 1000-run mark in Tests at home.
