Yashasvi Jaiswal became only the fifth batter overall to go past four digits in a single calendar year before turning 23.

Yashasvi Jaiswal on Friday altered the record books, becoming the first Indian batter to complete 1000 Test runs in a calendar year. Facing the New Zealand attack on the second day of the second New Zealand Test in Pune, his innings was cut short by Glenn Phillips but the Indian opener had achieved a massive feat before heading to the dressing room.
Yashasvi has now joined the list of legendary batters from world cricket who reached this feat. The benchmark was initially established by West Indies legend Garfield Sobers in 1958 when he piled up an impressive 1,193 runs. This remarkable feat stood unbeaten for 45 years until South Africa’s Graeme Smith surpassed it in 2003 with a total of 1,198 runs. A couple of years later, AB de Villiers notched it with 1008 runs in 2005 while former England captain Alastair Cook joined the fray with 1,013 runs in 2006.
After 18 years, Jaiswal did it and became only the fifth batter overall to go past four digits in a single calendar year before turning 23.

Despite reaching a phenomenal milestone, Jaiswal’s short-lived innings added to India’s innings on Friday as the top-order collapsed in the morning session. The hosts slip to 107/7 at lunch, leaving them trailing by another 152 runs in the first innings.
It was a regulation spin on a low-bounce surface that exposed the Indian batters in Friday’s morning session. On a low and turning wicket, Indian batters lacked in application and sound judgement as elementary mistakes saw the team staring at an enormous task of reducing the deficit and staying in the contest.
Resuming at 16/1, India lost six wickets for a mere 91 runs in the first session. The biggest shock arrived in the 24th over when their batting superstar Virat Kohli missed a juicy full-toss from Mitchell Santner (4/36) to be cleaned up for a nine-ball 1.
Rishabh Pant’s (18) attempt at a big cross-batted shot off Phillips’ part-time spin backfired as he misjudged the bounce and lost his wicket. Sarfaraz Khan (11) threw his wicket away, hitting a catch directly to mid-off, where William O’Rourke secured an easy grab off Santner.
The left-armer set the collapse in motion by trapping Shubman Gill (30) for the day’s first wicket, and later dismissed R Ashwin (4) leg-before with a low ball just before the break, steadily adding to India’s troubles.
