It’s always the bowlers who win ultimately, and former AUS skipper Justin Langer knew it all too well, stating the same on commentary after Jaiswal’s duck today.
Life comes at you fast. In the case of Yashasvi Jaiswal, it comes as fast as a missile from Mitchell Starc, who had the final laugh at the young Indian opener after dismissing him on Day 1 of the Second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Adelaide on Friday.
The left-arm pacer trapped India’s highest-ranked Test batter, Yashasvi Jaiswal, in front of the wickets on the first ball of the day-night Test.
It was Jaiswal’s second duck in the ongoing five-match Test series. He was dismissed for an eight-ball duck in the first innings of the first Test, which was played at Optus Stadium in Perth from November 22 to 25.
This would come as a bit of a stinger for young Jaiswal, who has famously exhanged a couple of cheeky words with the pacer in the first Test, en route to his sensational 161-run innings then.
With the momentum, firmly on India’s hands, Jaiswal after defending one of Starc’s deliveries took a moment to speak his mind.
“It’s coming too slow,” Jaiswal said. Starc, known to bowl in the 140kph mark, is no slouch when it comes to pace and Jaiswal’s words were likely to get under his skin. But Starc did not retaliate as he went back to his run-up with a smile on his face.
But, it’s always the bowlers who win ultimately, and former AUS skipper Justin Langer knew it all too well, stating the same on commentary after Jaiswal’s duck today.
Langer, who works commentary for Star Sports, said that one of the “bitter” lessons he learnt is that the bowlers always “get the last laugh.”
“One thing I’ve learnt at a very young age (is that) bowlers always get the last laugh. Eventually, you’re going to get out,” Langer said.
“Yeah, you might have a bit of banter with the bowler, but bowlers always get the last laugh. It’s a bitter lesson I’ve learnt early, and Mitchell Starc got the last laugh here.”
In Adelaide today, India seemed to recover after Jaiswal’s loss as Shubman Gill and KL Rahul notched a smooth fifty partnership in quick time.
But, all hell would break loose in the form of Starc, who would bag himself a fifer, and Scott Boland, who would wreak havoc over the Indian top-order to whittle them down to 87-5.
After losing the ever-fiery Rishabh Pant, Ravichandran Ashwin and Harshit Rana in quick succession to rattle India to 141-8, the visitors are looking to hang on with the aid of Nitish Reddy and who are looking to make a stand and guide India out of trouble.
