Sanju Samson has made a strong claim for a regular spot in India’s T20I team as opener having struck back-to-back hundreds.

Sanju Samson has been receiving plaudits after hitting consecutive T20I centuries for India. Having struck a hundred against Bangladesh last month, Samson followed that with another three-figure score, this time against South Africa in Durban on Friday to become the first ever Indian batter to do so at international level. Samson, who has been promoted to open the innings in T20Is, gave a witty response to a reporter who asked him to assess his performance as opener.
“Opener aapko maine dikha diya mai kaisa dikhta hoon. Baaki aap bolein mai kaisa dikhta hoon (I have shown how I am as an opening batter. You tell me how I look),” Samson said before bursting into laughter.
Samson scored 107 off 50, an innings that featured seven fours and 10 sixes. Thanks to his knock, India posted 202/8 in 20 overs and in reply, South Africa were bowled out for 141 in 17.5 overs.
Samson said the Indian team has been trying “go all in” no matter challenging the conditions are. “What we have been talking in the dressing room from so many seasons right after winning the World Cup or even from last 2-3 years is even if you lose the toss and even the conditions are tough, we have to go all in,” Samson said.
“We can’t think that we will have to look for something like 160-170 in these wickets because I think chasing becomes a bit easier. We were just looking to attack even knowing that the condition is slightly helping the bowlers,” he added.
India defeated South Africa earlier this year to win the T20 World Cup 2024 and Samson says the team wants to play like world champions and keep dominating this format.
“We are definitely the world champions at the moment. So I think we have to play like that and just keep on looking to dominate in this format,” he said.
