Australia’s veteran off-spinner, Nathan Lyon revealed the hilarious story of how he got sledged by India’s young opening sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series-opener in Perth.
Lyon who spoke in the ‘The Run Home with Joel and Fletch,’ podcast on YouTube shared the details of their conversation when the batter was in fine form during the second innings of the opening Test.
The young left-handed batter scored a blistering 161 off 297 deliveries to take the game away from the hosts, giving them an unsurmountable lead of 534 runs, also supported by Virat Kohli’s century and KL Rahul’s 77 runs.
The 37-year-old spinner talked about how Jaiswal who had gone past a hundred runs, had some words for the veteran Aussie during their battle.
‘Young Jaiswal, he said you legend but you’re old. He said that to me while bowling. He said that to me after he was on 120 or something but all in good fun,” Lyon shared.
“I said I appreciate that mate but I don’t feel that old,” he responded back.
It is safe to say Jaiswal came out of that battle as the victor but with the new pink ball challenge coming up, Lyon could capitalise on his experience and use it against the youngster.
The Indian team will look to extend their series lead with a win in Adelaide for the Day-Night Test begins on December 6. The Aussies have been fairly dominant especially on home soil with the pink ball while India will look to keep the demons from their horrific performance in the 2020-21 tour out of their minds.
Jaiswal will also be facing his first pink-ball Test match. He impressed during the practice game against the Prime Minister’s XI and scored 45 runs. He would hope that he can continue his good form, going into the rest of the series.
But Australia will not be looking to back down as they want to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar title after around a decade. They will have to start by getting a win in Adelaide to level the series first.
