Former India allrounder Yuvraj Singh turned back the clock and took a brilliant catch in the opening game of the International Masters League on Saturday, February 22, to show that he is still fit and upbeat at 43 years of age.
The catch came about in the eighth over of the game between India and Sri Lanka in the tournament. Chasing a 223-run target set by India, Sri Lanka were off to a quick start.
Just when Sri Lanka batters Kumar Sangakkara and Thirimanne thought they could take the match away from India, Yuvraj surprised them with a brilliant catch on the boundary line off Irfan Pathan’s bowling. Watch the video here:
Earlier, Sangakkara won the toss and put India in to bat. They were soon reduced to 26/2, losing Ambati Rayudu and batting legend Sachin Tendulkar by the fourth over.
Gurkeerat Singh and Stuart Binny then added 87 crucial runs for the third wicket and the partnership was broken by Chaturanga de Silva in the 12th over. The latter then added 33 runs for the fourth wicket with Yuvraj, before being dismissed by Isuru Udana for a stunning 31-ball 68.
Yuvraj and Yusuf Pathan then built a 76-run partnership for the fifth wicket to take India to 222, with the latter finishing with a 22-ball 56.
In the chase, Sri Lanka lost Upul Tharanga in just the second over, thanks to Dhawal Kulkarni. Sangakkara and Thirmanne then added 61 runs for the second wicket, before the latter had to go back to the pavilion, courtesy of the stunner from Yuvraj.
Sri Lanka were soon reduced to 119/5 in the 13th over before Asela Gunaratne and Jeevan Mendis added 68 runs for the sixth wicket to take the Lankans closer to the target, but the latter was dismissed in the 18th over by Kulkarni.
With nine runs needed off the final over, Abhimanyu Mithun picked two wickets to take India to a thrilling four-run win against Sri Lanka. Binny bagged the Player of the Match award for his 68-run knock.
